A new poll suggests that Americans are increasingly rejecting President Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
A poll conducted by NBC News/Wall Street Journal shows just 38 percent of Americans support Trump’s proposal, with 45 percent opposed.
The poll also shows that 53 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump’s response to a hurricane that devastated Puerto Rico.
Trump, meanwhile, has said the wall will be a success.
Trump and his advisers have been trying to rally support for the wall with a series of public events.
The president has also urged Americans to be willing to take on illegal immigrants and even threatened to withhold funding for the United Nations if Congress does not approve a wall.
The poll comes amid Trump’s push to win back Hispanic voters who have been voting Democratic for years.
Trump’s approval ratings are also dropping.
An NBC News-Wall Street Wall Street Journal poll released Wednesday showed Trump’s approval rating at 34 percent, down six points from a similar poll taken in November and six points below his approval rating in May.
Trump has also seen his support among women and those without a college degree drop to record lows.
